Subject: [FA11-011] AdaCore US local meeting minutes - Wed, Oct 11 2006

Wed, Oct 11th 2006 AdaCore US meeting minutes. AI's in brackets.

* Gail

  sles10 stuff: gtkada doesn't work on x86_64 linux. Need to decide
  whether to distribute all the software (precompiled binaries) GPS needs
  as we do for other platforms. We had the same problem on sles9. We need
  feedback from Arno.

  Looking at the latest ACATS software too.

  DEC tests are in limbo right now.

* Ramn

  Busy with a bunch of small sysadmin tasks that have accumulated in the
  past 6 weeks. We are switching to a new storage system (NAS), a new main
  server and a new CM system, so there will be a considerable sysadmin
  load this fall.

  Working on the vxsim653 port; trying to get the ACATS to run now, and
  working with Ed F. on adapting the starter kit (SK) on this port.

* Gary

  Doing wavefronts for Rockwell. They haven't had a wavefront for a long
  time: there were some copyright concerns about distributing Rockwell
  files (to Rockwell), but this has been solved (we can now give them
  their own software). Vectorcast wants now the GNAAMP compiler, so we
  have to sort out how the distribution of Rockwell software is handled.

  Working with Bob Duff for extended returns and limited function returns.
  Basic functionality is in, and there are some non-trivial details to
  sort out. Both will visit the NY office next week to talk about the
  loose ends.

* Ed Falis

  Working with one customer on the Mills product.

  Working on the SK to reduce the dependencies on AUnit and increase
  flexibility. And adapted to vxsim653.

  Waiting for a candidate release of vxsim653. Need to sort out wtx4
  debugger issues. Will do sanity check (SC) when the candidate is ready.

  Need to have windows wavefronts on 653 ASAP (both on PPC and vxsim),
  which requires a faster windows machine. The existing plans for this new
  machine have backfired;

  [Albert,Ramn] to work on setting up a new machine.

* Pat

  Working on GNATbench, mostly management and some development. Getting up
  to speed on VxWorks 6.

  Background tasks: sales, marketing, support and creating trainig
  materials.

  [Matt] will try a wavefront compiler and debugger on GNATbench for
  solaris.

* Brett

  Working on PPC stuff, the 5554 mostly. Working on how to get automatic
  testing going now that this is becoming a product. Need to find out what
  level of support we are commiting to to allocate resources accordingly.

  The 5554 board is a little peculiar.

  [Brett] will discuss with Nico Roche whether this board is good for us
  and look to see if there are more "standard" boards.

  [Brett] needs to set up his sparc-solaris machine.

* Hristian

  Working on the time-related issues in Ada 2005. Looking at bugs on
  time-handling: time zones and dealing of leap seconds.

  Recently provided some examples of co-extensions to help Ed in compiler
  development.

* Matt

  Getting up to speed on Workbench, VxWorks 6 and Eclipse. Available to do
  SC and deal with TNs on these areas.

  [Albert] to install VxWorks 6.3 on solaris so Matt can do the SC.

* Albert

  Working on a TN; one of the developer's gdb has a serious problem: can't
  find the DFW server and can't connect to the target. Working with WRS on
  the issue.

  Managing all the VxWorks6 versions saga: installing, archiving, etc.

* Richard

  Working on infrastructure: AC, telephones, NAS, etc.

  The NAS was ordered yesterday; it should come by in a couple of weeks,
  and will be installed once Richard comes back (20 days from now).

  [Richard] will point the sysadmin team to the documentation

  Cleaning up the handling of access types in gigi to get "limited with"
  working. Finishing up should take days.

* Joel

  Mostly working on Tornado debugger: breakpoints on data access, setting
  up debugger build environment.

  [Ramn] to set up yalu to build wavefront debuggers.

  Working on debugger bugs with Honeywell, Harris.

  [Bernard, Joel] to discuss offline the situation with Harris in more
  detail.

  Will be focusing on important tasks (as opposed to urgent ones) to be
  able to make progress on long-term projects.

* Javier

  Arrived to NY in September. Working on enhancing the front-end to
  statically allocate dispatch tables; there is a prototype ready that
  cleans up the generation of the dispatch table. Having some problems
  with a new Ada2005 rule about freezing which conflicts with gigi.

I haven't written any tests for co-extensions yet, this action item is in
my queue.

Wed, Oct 18th 2006 AdaCore US meeting minutes. AI's in brackets.

* Bob

  AI-318 is 1mm from being done; Gary is taking over. Switching to polyorb
  to port to windows (although there is no evidence it ever worked on
  windows). Working on some open TNs for the last three days.

* Gary

  Working on AI-318 design issues: support for allocator storage pools and
  storage checks. Will work on implementation before SIGAda.

  Case study with Rockwell and Rainier is not moving right now. We sent a
  draft to Rockwell but haven't heard back from them yet.

  Trying to transition to new laptop; was able to build GNAT on it
  yesterday.

  Looked into a common FE for JVM and .NET; this will be a lot of work,
  but seems feasible. Covering AAMP also is not feasible.

* Ed Falis

  Testing on vxsim653, waiting for a release to do SC. Made some changes
  to the SK.

  Looking at Jerome's work on integrating GPS and AUnit.

  Honeywell will wait on their debugger problem, so this is on hold

  Working on an optimization probelm for Smiths, but will handle it to a
  PPC expert.

  We should think of making available a GNATbench version for 653 at some
  point.

* Pat

  Working on the GNATbench release for VxWorks 6.3 and trying to figure
  out what's wrong with the Solaris port.

* Matt

  Working with Pat and Quentin testing GNATbench on Solaris. Need to look
  at the debugging problem that we're having on the native version too.

  Looking at polyorb on AIX: problems building the examples.

* Richard

  Finishing up on the limited with stuff.

* Joel

  Lots of different stuff on the debugger front. Finishing up the BODA
  work for Honeywell.

  Working at x86_64 regressions on linux; more regressions on ppc-elf,
  which may or may not be related.

  Started working on bugtool; running the bugtool testsuite now.

  Spending about 30% of time on FSF work.

* Javier

  Continue implementation of statically allocated dispatch tables.
  Regressions are down to three.

* Gail

  Working on GtkAda on x86_6, since it doesn't build at all.

  Misc ACATS stuff: thinking of storing baselines for all tests, which
  will improve our QA. The current method only looks for the PASSED line,
  but any subsequent output (like an exception) is ignored.

* Hristian

  Checked in a large fix to time zones today. This added some regressions
  to Clock, but fixes are being mailserved. Will switch to coextensions
  next.

* Vincent

  Working on documentation for the new gprmake

* Ben

  Doing a course on Lockheed last week; they're doing some interfacing
  with Java. Another course is coming up at the end of the month.

  Finalizing the Newsletter; circulated latest version earlier today and
  waiting for feedback. Doing also some PR work with Rainier.

* Brett

  Doing some investigation on boards for the 5554 port. Trying to automate
  the testing on the current board too.

  Working with Rainier on the A380 article.

* Albert

  Lots of hours spent with the VxWorks 6 problem at Lockheed Sunnyvale.

  Doing ongoing sysadmin work (ssh update, upgrading Richard's machine).
  Got interrupted by a problem discovered in our database and have been
  working on it high priority (FA16-017)

* Ramon

  Swamped with sysadmin stuff this week while building debuggers for 653.

* Ed Schonberg

  Working with Olivier on some representation clauses stuff. With Richard
  on limited with and anonymous access types; need to change the strategy
  to elaborate access types.

  Co-extensions turns out to be much more complicated than it seemed
  (since the definition is recursive), so spending time on that now.

* Bernard

  Trying to get us some money, pestering people that keep saying that the
  PO is on its way. But out fax machine is sitting idle :)

Wed, Oct 25th 2006 AdaCore US meeting minutes. AI's in brackets.

* Pat

  Continuing work on workbench/gnatbench to make things easier to use.
  Adapting to new versions of eclipse should not be hard to do --

  [Matt] will test eclipse 3.2 with gnatbench on linux and solaris,
  [Pat] will test windows

* Gary

  Transitioning to new laptop; the AAMP simulator is working so Gary is
  able to do testing. Running into problems with the debugger, but this is
  less critical.

  News on giving gnaamp to Vectorcast: the message from Dan Little should
  be good enough as a formal permission.

  Fixed a bug on access types for Franco.

  Pinged Todd Nelson to move the Rockwell case study along; we are not
  getting any help from Rockwell though.

* Matt

  Looking at workbench/gnatbench problems, plust a gdb problem with
  eclipse. Working on florist right now. Getting more involved on
  vxworks6/gnatbench stuff

* Richard

  Got the limited with stuff going; has a big patch that need to integrate
  into all gigi branches.

  Will move to the local goto work for Robert.

* Ed Falis

  Working on odds and ends: testing vxsim653, checking the vx653 nightly
  builds, working on the cert runtime binding error, the TN on
  optimization issue for Smiths (that Eric fixed), starter kit
  documentation on the SK for the MILS project.

  The 5.05 wavefronts for vx653 look good, but we need to decide whether
  to move this port to gcc4. Ideally setjmp/longjmp will work well, so we
  won't run into trouble with the cert runtime. We're waiting for the gcc4
  builds to stabilize a bit before starting to move other platforms (like
  vx653) to gcc4.

* Gail

  Fighting the release scripts so they are in shape for the release.
  Looking at the new ACATS scripts, which seem to work well.

* Hristian

  Started to write tests for coextensions; so far the support in the
  compiler is working well. Will roll back Ada.Calendar and go back to
  coextensions

  [Hristian] will coordinate with Vincent and circulate a summary of what
  Calendar facilities will be rolled-back and what will we be supporting.

* Vincent

  Working with Hristian on Calendar. Checking failing TNs and writing doc
  for gprmake.

* Ramn

  Finished the first big batch of sysadmin work for the fall: york
  (windows XP for vx653 builds) has substituted yalu, ziz is up and
  running (new x86_64 mailserver), ob is now running solaris 8 (downgraded
  from solaris 10), vitava is ready for installation (will run lynxOS
  4.2), fraser has been terminated (old vms machine belonging to HP), mpfr
  was installed on rum for gcc-head builds, and ganges is ready for use
  (vxworks6 ppc board).

  spree is in the ICU right now with a (tentative) memory problem, and
  kern is undergoing heavy testing to finally replace chico.

  [Gail] will test kern's binaries on chico to make sure they work.

  Finishing up the 5.04a1 vxsim653 port; a zip file is ready and Vasiliy
  is helping with the installshield.

  [Ed Falis] has offered to do the SC on this port once the IS is ready

* Ben

  Editing an article on security on programming languages for Embedded
  Systems, hopefully for the winter issue.

  The newsletter text was "finalized"; Fuka (in France) is working on the
  layout. The goal is to have it ready for SIGAda.

  Preparing a course for Lockheed Martin for later in the week.

* Albert

  Spent a lof ot time investigating the missing P/N on the database. The
  db has been fixed and everything is working fine. Next step is adding
  better logging to allow for better post-mortem if this happens again.
  Will also add a quick hack to catch db problems quickly.

  Will be doing a vxsim6 SC next. Working on the TN for Sunnyvale.

* Ed Schnoberg

  Working on Ada2005 FE bugs (mostly on anonymous access types and
  accessibility checks)

* Joel

  Finished his bugtool setup so now can do bugtool development.

  Working on the sparc64 debugger for the release.

  Had webex meeting with Honeywell 787 group in Phoenix about a gdb bug
  when debugging C++ code. It probably makes sense to travel there.

  Needs to re-install laptop.

* Javier

  Continuing work on the static dispatch table. Last week's estimate was
  too optimistic, and there are many new regressions. This is a very big
  change in the FE (12 files, 3000+ loc), so it will take time.

* Robert

  Meeting with Praxis. Finished the Cuifo paper for Embedded Systems.
  Found and fixed a bug in alignment in the FE. Doing a pass on open bugs
  to clean up prio's P, E and 4. Postponed the trip to Australia, and will
  travel to France in November.

  [Robert] will update his calendar today.

* Bob

  Working mainly on polyorb on windows -- a lot of build issues; it takes
  many hours to build. Worked on a few customer tickets this week too.

To be more precise, it's so that they work from here (US) and not
only when run from Europe. Actually, the immediate goal is to update
the ftp site, and I discovered that they dont work as they should
when invoked on this side of the Atlantic...

======================================================================
AdaCore US Technical Technical Meeting
Wednesday, November 1, 2006
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Bob Duff

	Working mostly on PolyORB. Almost built on Windows, 8 hours
	per build. Customers build this themselves on UNIX, building
	on Cygwin trying to get going, nightly test run is the goal.
	Ultimately, distributing binaries is what we'll do on Windows.
	Still problems w./ Cygwin bugs among other little issues.

Pat Rogers

	GNATbench - new stuff for Wizards and stuff. Writing note to
	WR about upcoming new stuff.

Ed Falis

	EADS putting Ada code into the CoreOS. Just figured it out,
	will get more instructions into the documentation.

Brett Porter

	Mostly working on flurry of little issues from Sikorsky. 5554
	board due November 7 at Brett's door, same board will be
	arriving simultaneously from the same distributor at Thales.

Gary Dismukes

	AAMP work, getting rid of AAMP TNs. Pretty set up on laptop.
	They have lots of engineers depending on the debugger, but
	nobody maintaining the debugger. AAMP stuff sent to
	VectorCAST.

Ramon Fernandez

	Cleaning up boards, ppc/x86 mess. Two new Vx6 machines, x86
	and ppc. Lynx 4.2 arrived today. Machine prepared for that,
	retiring yalu. New server install in NY office.

	York (Windows) getting set up, looking at InstallShield.
	Starter kit building, VxSim 653 release.

Albert Lee

	Vx6/simultor sanity check, otherwise working on assorted
	issues here and there.

Richard Kenner

	Limited with stuff. We have issues with order of elaboration
	and multiple levels of indirection.

Robert Dewar

	We have a nice opportunity for a point of view article on why
	Open Source/Free software is essential for secure software for
	SD Times. Discussion of voting machines. Misc technical
	stuff.

Gail Schenker

	SLES 10 qualification stuff is taken care of now. Testing
	kern binaries on chico. ACATS stuff, new scripts.

Matt Gingell

	Florist bug on AIX which causes mysterious TZ problems when
	you link with Florist. Eclipse 3.2 on Solaris, couldn't get
	binary release to run (GTK+ version only is supplied). On
	Linux, apart from debugging, everything seems to work.
	GNATbench on Solaris isn't looking so lucrative for us. Will
	build a Motif version on Solaris, just to see if the plugin
	loads.

	We should not be Eclipse suppliers (along with Eclipse
	installation help, etc.), only Eclipse plugin providers. Our
	position is to support people who already *have* Eclipse.

	We got LynxOS 4.2 CDs today. When machine is set up, Matt
	will see what GNAT on Lynx 4.2 looks like.

Hristian Kirtchev

	Stabilizing time issues on various targets. Designed document
	about time issues - leap seconds were a hot topic. Bob has
	discussed with ARG, lots of noise for now but let's wait to
	see if there's any convergence.

	Signed time type is creating many cleanups, very nice.
	Working on that right now.

Javier Miranda

	Prototype for statically allocated dispatch tables. 35 files
	will be changed, 6,500 lines. Expect to perform checkin very
	soon.

Ed Schonberg

	Front end Ada 2005 bugs, uncovered by Franco looking at
	anonymous access types. Co-extensions not made any progress
	since next week. 2 weeks till SIG Ada. Looks like we won't
	have MarteOS stuff, no checkins from that side.

Geert Bosch

	Testing linear algebra stuff on macos machine, fixing things
	to run on x86/Linux and SPARC/Solaris. Floating point
	attributes, various other arithmetic stuff.

Vincent Celier

	Working with Hristian on time stuff, with Cyrille and Manu on
	gprmake and Manu's new gprconfig tool. Not completely
	stabilized but shaping up. Working on gprmake documentation.
	Waiting on Cyrille to create document skeleton, so that it can
	be filled up.

Doug Rupp

	Itanium performance comparisons between HP-UX and VMS. Build
	time on VMS is much slower than HP-UX, trying to sort out why
	that's the case. VMS has very slow process creation and is
	horrible at handling lots of small files, so this might be
	expected. Robert will send Doug a message.

	Building GNU Expect for running GCC tests (dejagnu).

Wed, Nov 8th 2006 AdaCore US meeting minutes. AI's in brackets.

* Gail

  Working on the new scripts for ACATS. Also running the keern binaries on
  chico to retire this machine

* Robert

  Working on the SIGAda presentation. Also on the software security paper.

  The local goto is almost completed; the delivery is for December, so
  we're in very good shape.

* Matt

  Getting lynx4.2 builds running; fixing issues with the tasking runtime
  and gdb in order to get nightly builds runnning.

  [Matt] will look at gcc4.1 Ada & C++ compatibility issues on VxWorks

* Bernard

  Building ia64 hp-ux compiler, and done some work on the sparc64 port
  too. Will go back to sales work soon.

* Hristian

  Under the weather. Did some more work on time handling; fighting time
  issues on vxworks right now.

* Javier

  Spent the week cleaning the patches for statically allocated dispatch
  tables; will try to finish before transition to Makefile.gnat6.

* Ed Schnoberg

  Working on ASIS-related issues with Sergey. ASIS2005 doesn't exist yet
  -- the ARG needs to make a proposal. Tucker has a proposal too and it
  looks reasonable; Robert proposed to implement it pre-emptively.

  Working on small OOP bugs that a bunch of enthusiastic users have
  submitted.

* Ed Falis

  Doing sanity checking on the 5.04a1 vxsim653; new SK, cyggnat.dll
  needed. Will do the workbench testing next. [Ramon] will fix and
  re-package.

  Want to move to 4.1 on ppc-vx653; [Robert] will fix the remaining
  problem.

  Talked to Verocel about pricing for our ZFP certification.

* Bob

  Migrating to Makefile.gnat6 with partial success. Rewriting the build
  scripts for polyorb to use project files; this should improve the
  windows builds, but is a lot of work to get it right.

* Pat

  Mainly working on gnatbench, adding wizards to create projects and other
  stuff to improve usability.

* Gary

  Working on AAMP-related TNs, reducing the number of prio 7s. Trying to
  migrate to Makefile.gnat6, but with no luck. Will try some more work on
  AI-318 before SIGAda.

  No feedback from Vectorcast on GNAAMP.

* Ben

  Doing a lot of preparation for SIGAda. Finishing off the newsletter.
  Preparing for an ARA meeting tomorrow.

  Ed suggested Ben mentions the .Net project in the SIGAda presentation.

* Vincent

  Vincent is not having fun -- his computer broke down and Joel is helping
  save the day. [Robert] will send around a note to find out who's
  properly backing up their machines.

* Brett, Albert

  Visiting Sikorsky.

* Doug

  Busy with the flooding.

* Ramon

  Set up the lynx 4.2 machine; some more hardware maintenance on other
  machines; miscellaneous office and machine room cleanups. Finished off
  the IS setup on york so we now have installshields of daily wavefronts.
  Also produced a 5.04a1 vxsim653 release candidate, ready for sanity
  check.

Wed, Nov 15th 2006 AdaCore US meeting minutes. AI's in brackets.

* Pat

  Working on gnatbench mostly. The current version is 1.1.1, and would be
  nice to release a new version early next quarter. It works on windows
  and linux. We should try it on x86-64 linux too.

  Going back to MarteOS now, working on examples for training courses.

  The new version of Eclipse hasn't been tested yet.

* Gary

  Preparing for the upcoming ARG meeting this weekend. Had a call with
  Rockwell earlier today to try to move forward on the case-study; it
  seems to be a non-starter, since they don't want any info about their
  projects to go out.

  Transitioning to 4.1, which has taken quite a while. Not clear whether
  the development environment is good yet.

* Ed Falis

  Working on the SC for the vxsim product; lots for back and forth work
  with Ramon. Debugger is NOT OK.

  Working with Boeing St. Louis and MILS product. Helping EADS in Germany
  trying to run stuff in CoreOS. Work for Thales on AUnit analysis.

  [Ed] will fix the aunit-1.0.5 packaging problem.

* Joel

  The sparc64-solaris port is almost finished; it works on nile, but there
  are some problems on nova. The builds should be done on solaris8 (ob),
  while nova (solaris10) is just to test solaris10 compatibility.

  Planning for the upcoming release; checking the existing regressions on
  some platforms. Looking at vxworks6 debugger problems too with Jerome;
  there are some tentative cygwin-related issues here that need to be
  clarified.

  Need to do some work on gdb enhancements for Thales, but currently no
  time to do it. Will ask Paul.

* Brett

  The 5554 board has arived; can run basic little program on it, and
  working now on learning more on how it works.

* Bob

  Continuing work on polyorb project files. Will look at automake and
  autoconf to better understand how polyorb is built. Some other misc
  stuff: phone calls with RTI, trying to migrate to 4.1, some ARG work
  about the freezing rules.

* Gail

  Working mostly on the new acats scripts; cleaning up baselines too.
  Continuing with the testing of kern binaries on chico with Joel's help
  for gdb.

* Ramon

  vxsim653; bits and pieces on ssadmin

* Dan

  Open Architecture comitee had a meeting last week, but we don't know the
  outcome of it. 4 out of 6 contracts at the Naval Surface Workfare Center
  were not renewed, and the 5th was cancelled after the PO was sent in. We
  need to find out what's going on.

  Surface Ship Self Defense in San Diego (mixed language, but lots of Ada
  in it) was completed and the Navy is happy with it. Trying to get a
  success story out. -- will try at high prio

* Vincent

  Working on gprclean to clean up after gprmake. Computer is now up and
  running, and bought a hard drive for backups.

* Albert

  Spent most of last week cataloguing problems with the debugger on ppc.
  [Albert] will re-take the CRM database issue

* Richard

  Finished the limited with stuff. For the local goto the code is
  different for gcc3 and gcc4, so sorting this out now.

  Nagging Sun about our new storage system; the delivery date keeps
  slipping, so we don't know when it will ship.

* Matt

  Working on lynx 4.2; nightly builds are working. Trying to run the acats
  now, but can't find how to use donotrun.txt; will check with Gail to
  sort this out.

  Coming week will be looking at g++ compatibility on vxworks and gprmake.

* Hristian

  Fixed timezone bug on vxworks; fixed XP bug on aunit. Finished cleanup
  in Calendar; the leap second stuff is controlled by a switch now JIC
  some target supports it at some point. Done the manual testing on VMS
  and written some tests for VMS. Spent some time transitioning to
  Makefil.gnat6 too.

* Javier

  Spent whole day thrusday doing a large check-in (for the statically
  allocated dispatch tables) that had to be backed out on friday. There is
  an issue with the current freezing rules, which will be discussed at the
  ARG this coming weekend.

  Working on a paper for Ada Europe now.
